« The Call » (A phone Call can change a life..)
Many in the music community in Music City believe that “it all begins with a song.” That is one of the mottos of the Nashville Songwriters Association International. One artist who believes those words in Georgia-born singer Matt Kennon. He has witnessed the impact of those words first-hand, with the success of his debut BamaJam single, “The Call.”
“It was a true blessing to have the ability to channel that song,” he says of the tune, which deals with three different potentially life-changing situations. “I really believe that song came from the Good Lord. It was put on my heart to write a song that I thought could touch other people. I know that there have been times in my life where I have been flat on my back, and had several friends, Good Samaritians, and family members that helped get me back on my feet. With this song, that’s what we wanted to do. We took some real-life situations, and my co-writers, Noah Gordon and Jeremy Campbell got in a room, and it was very therapeutic for us to talk about that stuff, and we came up with the song.”
While each verse has a powerful impact, the one that details a last-minute change of heart at the doctor’s office while waiting to have an abortion is the one that seems to be getting the most attention. “It was one of those things where she wasn’t sure what she wanted to do, and if she wanted to go through with it. Then, she gets a phone call, and what a beautiful ending. What a powerful message of hope, that it could be just a phone call away. It’s not the mistakes you make in life, but it’s what you do after the fact. I’m still moved when I hear the song or see the video. Trey Fanjoy did a fantastic job directing it, and she really got it.”
The lyrics of the song do have some personal meaning for the singer. Matt’s mother, a poor woman who could barely support one young son, made the painful decision to abort him. She arrived at her doctor’s office two weeks too late to have the abortion performed, and was told she had no choice but to carry the baby full term. The same doctor had another patient, a mother of four who had tragically lost three of her children in a house fire. Unable to have more children, the woman jumped at the chance to adopt Matt. That’s not the only circumstance of his life being affected by a phone call…..
